Project Overview
D&M Building Services delivered an internal refurbishment at a school in Southwell, transforming tired washroom and classroom facilities into clean, functional, fit-for-purpose spaces. The defining challenge was simple to state and difficult to execute: the school remained fully operational throughout, which meant every element of the build had to be planned, sequenced and managed around the realities of a working education environment.
The Brief
The school needed its washroom and classroom facilities stripped out and refitted to a standard suitable for daily use by staff and pupils. The works involved structural alteration, new partitioning, and a full fit-out of sanitaryware, storage and finishes – all to be completed without disrupting the school’s day-to-day operation and with a handover clean enough to put straight back into service.

- Formation of new door openings and removal of internal wall sections
- Construction of new stud walls, plasterboarding and making good
- Installation of door frames and fitting of doors

- Installation of toilet cubicles, toilets, sinks, taps and hand dryers
- Fit-out of classroom sink units, wall units and storage shelving
- Tiling to window cills and sink splashbacks

- The build was carefully sequenced so that disruption was contained and the site stayed safe at every stage, with clearly defined working areas and handover points.

- Working alongside an operational school demands a heightened safety standard. Temporary protection, controlled working areas and careful coordination were managed throughout to keep the environment safe for staff and pupils.
A clean, ready-to-use handover.
- The works closed with a professional deep clean appropriate for a school setting, so the spaces could be put straight back into service rather than requiring further preparation.
Delivery & Outcome
The works were delivered on programme and to standard, taking the facilities from strip-out through to a fully fitted, cleaned and handed-over space ready for everyday use.
The project demonstrates D&M’s ability to manage structural alteration and fit-out works within the constraints of a live, occupied environment, a capability that translates directly to schools, offices and other operational commercial settings.
